About Mark Satterfield & Gentle Rain Marketing
Obviously, I don’t know what goals you’ve set for yourself and your business. In all candor, my first few years as a solo-consultant were a period of time of trying on a number of hats, and a fair amount of wandering semi-blind through the forest, bumping into a number of trees. It took me longer than I anticipated to conceptualize and implement a vision for what I wanted my business to become.
Like most solo-consultants, when I started out I primarily focused on the delivery of my services. That’s natural. One of the reasons we start our businesses is to share our expertise.
But, as Dad would say, the most important part of chicken soup is the chicken. I’ll be the first to admit that I placed too little emphasis (and thought that it would be much easier than it is) on how to attract consistent streams of new business.
Perhaps like you, what little marketing I did, tended to focus on networking and generating referrals from those I knew. There is certainly nothing wrong with that, but I found that it had some severe limitations.
First, although I thought of myself as having a large group of contacts, I quickly “lapped the track” when asking them for referrals. Secondly, all of my networking activities tended to be very labor -intensive. Thus, when business picked up, I no longer had the time to do the networking. Not surprisingly, this resulted in the feast and famine business cycles that many of us are far too familiar with.
After about 5 years of this, (and at the point when I was just about ready to throw in the towel) I finally did invest in two coaches who helped me develop and implement a marketing system that keeps my pipeline full with new prospects and clients.
If I had to do it all over, the one change I would have made would be to hire a coach much earlier. I’m not necessarily recommending that you take advantage of my Gentle Rain Coaching program, but I would encourage you to consider investing in someone who can assist you in setting up a system for attracting more brand new clients.
If you become a subscriber to my newsletter I’ll be sending you additional emails describing how I did that, and perhaps at some point you will feel comfortable in investing in some of my continuing education programs or coaching services.
But my purpose in writing you today is to simply say “Thank You” for being a reader of my blog. Developing a solo-consulting business around your passion can be incredibly rewarding. Hopefully my thoughts will be of help to you on your journey.
